Moving becomes more challenging when you have kids.
It’s very difficult for them as they have to part ways from their friends, get away from what they are comfortable with like their neighbourhood, and house where they have been living for years.
After moving they again have to adjust to the new town and even embrace their new school. All this can really be emotionally draining.
This is why to handle your kids with care during the move we have put together some tips which will help you sail through the move smoothly.
1. Tell them why you’re moving
Be truthful and tell them about the move way in advance. Call for a family meeting. Don’t try to hide anything from them. Tell them the reason why you have to move. Let them know in what ways the new place is going to be better. Give them some time to rationalise the whole thing.
Kids are smart and they might have some questions for you. Answer them as sweetly as you can.
Let them know how you’re going to travel and what can they bring along. Also let them know when will they be able to meet their friends the next time.
2. Don’t wait until last minute to tell them about the move
Telling them about the move last minute would emotionally break them so let them know about the move in advance. Tell them how their new house is going to be like and what are the attractions around the new city.
If you have teenage kids then hiding about the relocation would be wrong on your part. Let them prepare themselves for the move and also create memories with their friends.
3. Hire a professional moving company
Remember you also have to comfort your kids while you’re packing and relocating. So let the heavy duty work of carrying the boxes and furniture to the truck be done by the moving professionals. You should try and focus on things like what your children are going to need during the move and so on.
4. Keep your kids away from packing
If you think your children would be able to help you in packing then you’re wrong. Firstly it will take them longer to pack things. Secondly it’s better that they stay away from things such as knives, scissors and any other sharp items which are used while packing.
What your children can help you with is packing their own stuff like toys, their clothes etc. Knowing where their things are will kind of comfort them.
If you have teenagers then let them help you gather packing materials. They can also help you unpack your stuff at the new house.
Never let them feel that you’re trying to control them. Try to make them feel that they’re doing some important part of the moving process.
You can also let them choose their own room. Choose the colour of their room etc. This will make them feel excited about the move.
5. Be prepared for the transit
It’s really important that you carry some goodies for the way to your new home. May be their favourite toy will keep them comfortable during the journey.
You should also carry everything that is needed if your kid is in the napping age. Also don’t forget to carry some food which you might need along the way.
After you reach your new house do not put your kids under any kind of pressure. They will take their own time to get used to the new environment.
Don’t force them to make new friends or participate in any school activity. Give them some time they will come in the groove.
